Hoosier Boy's State

Cliff's junior year he was chosen as the Hoosier Boy's State delegate for our school.  It was quite an honor...we weren't quite prepared for the consequences.  He would go for one week in June...he would stay on campus at a university up north.

***Hoosier boys state...one delegate from each participating school in Indiana is chosen to come together to learn about Indiana government.  They hold elections...for state and county offices.  They learn what each elected officials job duties are, and then have a mock govenment day ..it is very educational.

Cliff had a blast...he came home very excited...he was elected as the state assessor...made many new friends...and decided he would like to change his college plans...instead of being a doctor he now was looking into politics.  Oh I hope that changes...!!!!

He came home with something else...a pressure sore...!!!  Pressure sores...ulcers...bed sores...whatever you call them they are a paraplegics worst night mare...  How did this happen!!!  Cliff figured it was the shower chair...he has always taken a bath.. getting in and out by himself.. but at boy's state they didn't think that was safe enough so they insisted he use a handicap room with a handicapped shower chair.  It had a rough seat and didn't have a high back...Cliff's balance isn't the greatest so it would take him forever to take a bath.  (It takes 20 minutes for a pressure sore to form)

...and with Cliff being Cliff, he didn't let me know until about the middle of August...two months later...ewww!!!  and then I had to question him...I had noticed his boxers were always damp on the right side and he had started sweating profusely.  What started as a pin hole was now about the size of an eraser.  So off to the doctor we went...bad news...Cliff's Doctor was getting ready to retire and was handing "his kids" over to a new doctor...we will call him Dr. Didalittle.

Dr. Didalittle...he looked at his hip...had the nurse show me how to do wet to dry bandages...sent us home... said if it wasn't any better in two weeks to bring him back in.  So in two weeks back in we went...only now he had a fever along with the drainage from the ulcer and the sweating is continuous.  Dr. Didalittle looked at his hip...had the nurse show me how to do wet to dry bandages and sent us home said if it wasn't better in two weeks to bring him back in...de ja vu.  Two weeks later we get to see Dr. Didalitte again...this time he said basically the same thing only he put him on an antibiotic.

This went on every two weeks until I blew my top, it takes alot for me to blow up but when I do everyone should stay clear within about a 100 mile radius...my blow up took place around the first of November, three months after treatment was started.  By this time the ulcer was the size of a pop can...you can only imagine how much drainage he had...he was wearing three t-shirts so his outer shirt wouldn't get sweaty....he had fever constantly and was losing alot of weight.  Dr. Didalittle wanted to send him home doing the same routine we had been doing since the middle of August...what about this routine did he think was working..???  I well...I called him a quack...fired him...demanded to see another doctor...!!!!  He on the other hand called security...called the staff psychiatrist...told me I was crazy...I told him he was a poor excuse for a doctor.  This went on and on.

Then my angel appeared...Brenda...She had been Cliff's nurse since he was born.  She knew Cliff and I very well.  She asked Dr. Didalittle to leave the room...called off security...told the psychiatrist his services were not needed.  She got a camera...took a picture of Cliff's hip.  She couldn't believe what it looked like.  I don't know if any of you have ever seen a pressure sore...this was our first experience.  This was this size of a pop can and growing...raw meat...open...oozing...red...swollen.  She asked us to leave quietly...she would be seeing Dr. Lindseth soon...he would be in contact with us.

Brenda e-mailed the picture to Dr. Lindseth...he phoned me by the end of the week.  He was out of the country...visiting his wifes family in Polland.  He was very ashamed by the treatment Cliff was getting...he was beside himself by the way I was treated by a man who called himself a doctor...by a man whom he was handing "his kids" over to.  We were to be in his office on Tuesday the following week...he was cutting his vacation short...

Dr. Lindseth was appalled when he actually saw the ulcer with his own eyes.  We were scheduled for surgery the next day...

The surgery only lasted a couple of hours and our hospital stay was short, 4 days I think but the surgery was drastic...the pressure sore was on Cliff's right hip...it was a little larger than a pop can on the outside...on the inside the part that Dr. Didalittle couldn't see was the size of a paper plate and had infected the bone.  Dr. Lyndseth had to remove all the tissue and the lower portion of his hip.  ......urggggg.

The hospital stay was short....the recovery long.  We had to rent an air bed...he laid on his left side from November to the end of February.  Thank goodness Cliff was a good student...he sat out his whole second Trimester.  They were going to use a web cam and let him school that way...but one of the councelors thought that was showing favoritism.  We had a tutor from the school come twice a week to do the lessons but he never turned anything in....so...Cliff lost the whole second trimester...and still graduated with honors.: )

***Dr. Lindseth came out of retirement soley for Cliff...he was his one and only patient for the next four years.  Cliff would see him in clinic at the hospital every 6 months and he still had his surgery rights...those rights would be utilized in the coming years.....

I think I know Dr. Didalittles' twin brother.  Why do people like that go into the health field?  I loved your blogs...I got so caught up in it I read everyone of them.  What a fabulous story and family.  What a blessing.  I'll def. be back.

I think I ran into the same Medicaid "idiots" you did.  Durring my first preganancy we ran into some complications.  One day of Dr. bills was at least three times as high as what my husband was bringing home in a month.  We had Dr. appts. like that almost weekly.  We didn't qualify...we made too much money.  Go figure.

I've been wrapped up in my own little world lately...but I'm trying to catch up with all the blogs I've missed!

That doctor is an idiot...I admire you for not killing him. I think I would have. How wonderful though that your original doctor came back to help Cliff. I don't know many doctors who would have...and that's sad.

UUGGHH!  Chris that is terrible!  Thank God for that nurse.  She is the one that saved the day!

Illinois has a Girls' State and Boys' State.  I never went, but I wouldn't have been interested in politics anyway!

Why would a doctor let a pressure sore grow from the size of a eraser to the size of a popcan?!?!  It sickens me.  Jackass.  Like changing the bandages helps with deteriating skin and tissue and fever.  I'm glad you blew up!  You very well could have saved Cliff's life by doing so!

You are so lucky to have an amazing doctor like that to help you out and be there!

"Dr. Didalittle?" You are much to kind. I would have called him "Dr. WhataQuack" or "Dr. DidntDoCrap". :-)

You are very fortunate that Cliff's regular doc un-retired just for him. What a guy!

Thanks for continuing the story. Someties it is heartbreaking to read but I love how you and Cliff and your family pull together and work through every crisis.

Let's hope MSN lets me publish this comment. It is my 7th try. Sheesh.

I hope Dr. Didalittle paid for that surgery!  That is horrible!!  You had every right to blow up at that idiot and then for him to call security....the nerve of that poor excuse for a Doctor!!  Thank God Brenda had more brains than he did.  And what an awesome man Dr. Lindseth is!

I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Hi Chris,

I just thought I'd stop by and say hello!  I hope all is well?

I also wanted to tell you that I have lifted the PRIVATE ban on my MSN space.  Anyone can access it now.

However I still have disabled all the comment sections as I don't really plan to update it.  I lifted it mostly because I think there is very useful information there and I want anyone to be able to access it.

I have left a link to the NEW space and I hope people can figure out how that works?

Feel free to pass along the links to my Crohn's Corner to anyone that you think might find them useful.

Or the link to my story <--- click it!

Wishing you well.

Man, that really boils my blood!  Dr's like that SHOULD be fired and out of practice.  Sad thing is, he may have graduated from "dr" school but he was probably right at the bottom of that class!! Ugh!!!

I'm glad Cliff made it through the pressure sore.  They are tough and it's so frustrating to hear how long he had to go with it.  I'm nervous to hear about the other surgeries that came along.

hugs,

Wow, what a horrible story! It sounds like it's had a good outcome.  Cheers to the doc who came out of retirement and to that nurse! Pressure sores are such nasty, wicked things. Cheers to you also for standing up to that doctor who never changed his treatment. What did happen to him?

Hello Chris!
Yes, what happened to doctor Didalittle? Is he still practicing? Did he realized that Cliff lost part of his hip because of him?
I am so sorry for Cliff he went trough all the surgeries. And some bad doctors. I know it is hard to find just good dentist doctor.
Good that you get mad. The security should take him and close him that he couldn't do more damage!
Yes, your old doctor is an Angel and you can see that just in his access and responsibility for the patient. It is good that he still keeps eye on Cliff.

You know, I realize that there's the whole liability thing and all that stuff, but you'd think that the boy's state organizers would feel confident enough to let Cliff (who was obvioulsy intelligent enough to be invited) decide the best way to take care of himself.  Dr. Didalittle on the other hand *shudder*.  Not only incompetent, but to call security on someone with an obviously legitimate concern (whether he might have though it valid or not) is just beyond bizarre.

It sounds like Dr. Lindseth should be teaching a medical ethics and responsibility class!  What a saint (along with the nurse who no doubt ended up taking some flack from Dr. Incompetent for making him look bad--as though he needed help).

Hope you have a great weekend, and glad to see you blogging again!

Wow. I am amazed at the lack of quality health care, and that doctors who practice sub-standard care are able to get away with it. I learned yesterday of a doc whose incompetence contributed to the decline of hubby's grandfather. The doc was so sure of his supreme knowledge, that he refused to check if it was possible for a certain medication to poison a patient. Anyway, that sounds like the case here - too confident in his supreme knowledge, and too quick to discount the concerns of the patient and caregiver (you). What a jerk.

You obviously had an ally with Dr. Lindseth. What a wonderful man. I am so glad you found him.

As for your living in one town your entire life, I'm envious. I've never had friends that lasted past the next move. I have one friend from high school with whom I'm in sporadic contact, but I wouldn't be able to point to *anyone* and say he/she is my best friend/lifelong friend. I gre up as a military brat, so we moved no less than every three years my entire life. It was hard. I would love to know everyone in town, and know that they would be there for me and my family should a crisis arise. You are truly prosperous. :)

Glad you're back and feeling better, Chris. Have a fantastic weekend.

I don’t know if it’s because of my high prednisone dose or if it’s just my girlie side shining through but reading that brought tears to my eyes.

It’s amazing what having a caring, compassionate and intelligent doctor can do for a patient.  I know it’s a hard profession and I’m sure they are very stressed out but they have to know this going into it don’t they?  If they don’t think they can fit ALL the criteria then they really should reconsider.  It can’t ALL be about the money!  It makes me sick to see a doctor with no bed side manor, no common sense and no regard for the living, breathing person in front of them.  Makes me sick!

I have been blessed with some amazing doctors in my 10 year struggle.  I have come to love them not just as doctors but as friends and colleagues.  They treat me, they care about me and then we work together to try and find a cure.  I fundraise, they fundraise and then they use the funds to conduct their research.  I’m proud of both my guys.  They have all accomplished a lot in the field of research in a cause that’s soo near and dear to me and my family.

Neither of them has any IBD cases in their family.  This is something that they do because it’s their specialty and they can help… so they do!

They have both come to my aid straight from a golf course on their days off.  They have both called from home “just cause” to see how I’m doing.  They have both squeaked me into an already full days worth of patients.  My doc can be 3 hours behind but he never turns me away.  I love him!

I honestly believe that if I had been handed over to another doctor… my life would not be what it is today.

I’m soo happy that Cliff was able to find a connection to someone like that.  It means so much to me it actually makes me emotional to talk about it.

Hugs to you Chris,

mt
